The City Council on Tuesday, unanimously voted to dedicate one of the three fields at the Fullerton Sports Complex after Carter, who played Little League baseball in town and lettered in three sports at Sunny Hills High School.
"It's a tremendous honor to him," said Carter's brother, Gordon Carter of Santa Ana. "He was not only a tremendous ballplayer, but a tremendous person."
Shortly after his death, the council directed the Parks & Recreation staff to find a way to memorialize Carter.
Field No. 2 at the Sports Complex, considered the facility's showcase field, will be named Gary Carter Field.
Signs will be added and a dedication ceremony will take place next spring at a cost of about $3,000, according to a report to the council.
Carter always remembered his Fullerton roots.
In 2004, Carter participated in opening-day ceremonies for West Fullerton Little League, when the James Carter Memorial Field was dedicated for Carter's father, who managed in the league and had died the previous year.
In 2008, Carter was again back in his hometown when he took the job as manager of the Orange County Flyers, an independent minor league baseball team that played in Fullerton.
A painting of Carter, along with a banner memorializing the baseball great, hangs in the Sunny Hills gymnasium. The Lancers' baseball field is also named after Carter.
