Film Institute Expands Art Fund For Caribbean - Bahamas News

filmmaking

NEW YORK, USA ? The Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) has announced the expansion of the TFI Latin America Media Arts Fund, including the first TFI/WorldView Partnership grants.

The grants, which this year total over $90,000 ? the most in the Fund?s four year history and over 30% more than last year?s awards ? support innovative film and video artists living and working in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America.

The TFI Latin America Media Arts Fund?s grants are awarded to feature-length documentaries, animated films, or hybrid films that are story-driven and in advanced stages of development, production or post-production with no U.S. or Latin American distribution in place. In addition to financial support, each grantee will receive year round guidance from TFI which includes professional development opportunities, pitch training workshops, and industry one-on-one meetings with international decision makers.

A new partnership with WorldView will award three additional $10,000 development grants to filmmaking teams based in Latin America and the Caribbean. Fund recipients will be announced at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. The Fund is sponsored by MOVIECITY and CANACINE.

?Since inception, the Fund has sought to encourage Latin American artists to redefine, invent, explore and create stories that reflect their diverse cultures,? said Ryan Harrington, director of documentary programming for TFI.

?We are proud to expand our support for Latin filmmakers who bravely push the boundaries of artistic storytelling, and with the help of our partners, look forward to sharing their diverse visions with wider audiences.?

?WorldView are delighted to be partnering and sharing in the vision with TFI and we look forward to co-presenting the initiative together with TFI to emerging storytellers in Argentina, Chile, and Trinidad & Tobago in the coming months? said Himesh Kar, consultant at WorldView.

In addition to its support of filmmakers based in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Fund will also continue to provide grants to Latino filmmakers 21+ living and working in the US through the Heineken VOCES Award, which supports feature-length narrative and documentary projects in all stages of production that explore stories reflecting diverse cultures. The first-ever VOCES grant winners were announced at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.

Arctic sea ice melting, sets record low (+video)

New data shows Arctic sea ice has fallen to the lowest point ever recorded and it's likely to continue melting through mid-September. As the Arctic warms, so does the rest of the globe, warn activists.?

By Staff,?Reuters / August 28, 2012

A polar bear is seen in the water during an aerial survey in this file photo. Arctic sea ice shrank to its second-lowest level ever, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday, with particular melting in the Chukchi Sea, where polar bears were recently seen swimming.

The world's Arctic ice?cap has shrunk to a new low, surpassing a record set only five years ago, and is expected to keep retreating for a few more weeks, according to U.S. data released on Monday.

The Arctic sea ice?fell to 1.58 million square miles, or 4.10 million square kilometers, down 27,000 square miles from 2007, the lowest since satellites began measuring the ice?in 1979, according to the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center.

"It's a little surprising to see the 2012 Arctic sea ice?extent in August dip below the record low 2007 sea ice?extent in September," said?Walt Meier, a scientist with the data center.

"It's likely we are going to surpass the record decline by a fair amount this year by the time all is said and done."

The ice?is expected to dwindle until mid- to late-September when the summer melting usually ends, according to the center.

Shrinking of the Arctic?ices alarms scientists and environmentalists because the Arctic?acts as the world's air conditioner, helping to moderate the globe's climate.

As parts of the Arctic?melted, this year has been marked by record heat in much of the Northern Hemisphere, especially across the continental?United States?which has been ravaged by drought.

Most scientists blame global warming for the retreat of the Arctic ice?and there is concern that the growing amounts of open water means the Arctic?will not be as effective moderating the planet's climate.

"These preliminary figures provide irrefutable evidence that greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming are damaging one of the planet's critical environments, one that helps maintain the stability of the global climate for every citizen of the world," said?Kumi Naidoo, executive director of?Greenpeace.

Half of Americans Die With Almost No Money - Structured ...

Home ? All, Headlines

Retireee contemplates financial readinessPrior to 2009, many injured plaintiffs were most concerned with investing their settlement proceeds in the stock and real estate markets. Since 2009, I have seen a shift in focus. The largest concern by injured plaintiffs today is outliving their money. There is good cause for worry.

A recent article posted on MarketWatch cites a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research showing that 46% of American retirees have just $10,000 when they die. While people can live with limited savings, the study?s findings are a reminder of how fragile our economic conditions are if a financial emergency occurs. A structured settlement that prepares for unforeseen medical and other uncertainties during retirement means injured parties can enjoy financial peace of mind when it matters most.

NFL to use replacement officials for Week 1

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, right, argues with an official during the second quarter of an NFL preseason football game against the Denver Broncos in Denver, Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Joe Mahoney)

(AP) ? The NFL will open the regular season next week with replacement officials and said it was prepared to use them "as much ... as necessary" afterward.

Replacements will be on the field beginning Wednesday night when the Dallas Cowboys visit the New York Giants in the season opener, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams in a memo. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union.

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement have gone nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized. The speed of the game and the amount of time starters are on the field increase exponentially for real games, making the replacements' task more challenging.

Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, told the clubs in a memo Wednesday that the replacements will work "as much of the regular season as necessary," adding that training with each crew will continue.

The NFL noted it has expanded the use of instant replay as an officiating tool this year to include all scoring plays and turnovers. Officiating supervisors will be on hand to assist the crews on game administration issues.

"We are not surprised, based on Ray Anderson's statements ... that the NFL was not going to reach out to us," NFLRA spokesman Michael Arnold said. "However, this is consistent with the NFL's negotiating strategy which has been 'take it or leave it and lock them out.' It now appears the NFL is willing to forego any attempt to reach a deal in the last seven days before opening night."

The NFL Players Association, which went through a 4 ?- month lockout last year before settling on a new contract, expressed disappointment about the decision to use replacements.

Colts safety Antoine Bethea said there is a feeling of solidarity with the officials.

"They've got to do what they've got to do, and we were in a similar situation a little while ago," Bethea said. "So you can't fault those guys for doing what they have to do."

Anderson said the sides remain considerably apart on economic issues, including salary and retirement benefits. He also told the teams there is a substantial difference on operational issues.

"One of our key goals in this negotiation is to enhance our ability to recruit, train, and replace officials who are not performing adequately," Anderson said. "We believe that officials should be evaluated and performance issues addressed in the same way as players, coaches, club management and league staff. We have proposed several steps to accomplish this, including having a number of full-time officials and expanding the overall number of officials."

The NFL is offering to add three full officiating crews, increasing the total number of officials to 140. The NFLRA insists the compensation being offered with such an increase would reduce the officials' pay.

The league is proposing having seven officials ? one per position of referee, umpire, line judge, side judge, back judge, field judge, head linesman ? who would train, scout, handle communications, safety issues and rules interpretations year-round. Now, all NFL game officials are part-time employees, with outside jobs ranging from lawyers to teachers to business owners.

In response, the NFLRA has said it is not opposed to full-time officials "if they are fairly compensated."

The union also disputes the value of the league's current salary offer, which it says would not be the 5 percent to 11 percent increase the NFL claims.

And the union questions the league's adherence to player safety initiatives by using replacement officials, none of whom has recently worked Division I college games. Many of the officials who were replacements in 2001 came from the Division I level.

"The league has placed a lot of emphasis on player health and safety in the last few years and we do feel we are an integral part of that," Arnold said. "We think it is unfortunate and we really don't understand why the league is willing to risk playing safety and the integrity of the game by utilizing amateur officials."

Anderson told the teams that the replacements have "undergone extensive training and evaluation, and have shown steady improvement during the preseason."

Arnold disagreed.

"The referees want to get back on the field," Arnold said. "Our members have been engaged in extensive preparations and are ready to go."

Everything About Having The Perfect Wedding Day | RelationshipsA ...

A very romantic moment for a couple may be an engagement. Planning a wedding, however, isn't always so romantic. Sometimes it stresses one or both future spouses out and may even lead to relationship trouble. The following article offers couples some hints and tips on how to plan their wedding in a manner that is as pleasurable as the idea of the actual wedding ceremony.

One way to add glamour to your look on wedding day is to research the possibility of renting diamonds to add to your ensemble. In this way, you will be able to wear gorgeous jewels at a nominal cost.

Make sure that you carefully consider what to include in your vows, as they will be something that your future spouse remembers forever. Marriage is supposed to mean the rest of your life, including both ups and downs. When you are saying your vows ensure your spouse knows and understands that you love them with all of your heart.

Think about your guests when planning flower arrangements for the reception. Frequently, these flowers are a nuisance to your guests, since they get in the way. Excessive flowers can also be inconvenient for any allergy sufferers who are attending your wedding. Opt for using non-scented candles instead of flower arrangements for a romantic and luxurious look.

When choosing your wedding dress, consider not only your favorite dress styles, but the styles that are most flattering on your body as well. For instance, if you are of shorter height, you shouldn't go for a dress of normal length, but instead shop in petite sections for a better fit. You will be much happier with your choice.

Weddings can be stressful, but planning can make everything run smoothly. This gives you plenty of time to get ready in the morning without the chore of waking up early. If your time allows, do something for yourself that is relaxing and calms your nerves.

Consider borrowing a special piece of jewelry from a friend or family member. This can help you achieve a nice look, while also letting you focus money in other areas to make your wedding much better.

If you will not be serving a supper at the reception, think about using other furniture instead of tables and chairs. Items such as chaise lounges, or lounge chairs can help your guests to interact more easily. If your seating is soft and comfortable, it'll be easier for guests to relax, and having plenty of furniture will let you set up several different lounging areas across the site.

Choose someone who has an interest in photography that you will enjoy working with. They can also help round up family members for group portraits.

Families are all too willing to push family traditions on you for your wedding, but gently remind them this is your wedding and try to compromise. Politely thank them, but remind them it is up to you and your new spouse to make the decisions. This way you get exactly what you want for your wedding day.

Use the above advice to make planning your wedding another memorable bonding experience. If you plan your wedding together you can help build a base for your marriage. The tips featured above will help couples to plan their dream wedding and prepare for a successful long term partnership.

When you want your special event fashions, you'll find quality Williamsburg.

Furniture store's pet fish moving to The Deep after out-growing tank ...

A PET fish with a personality as big as his gigantic fins is making waves ? after he grew too big for his tank and his unsuspecting owners.

Paco, a black pacu ? a vegetarian cousin of the piranha ? has been taken in by the Deep, in Hull, because he has grown so big he can no longer turn around in his tank at Grimsby Pine Centre, off Convamore Road.

He has already grown to be half-a-metre long but before long, the four-year-old fish will grow to a mammoth 3ft ? not ideal when the tank he lives in is a mere 5ft long.

Owner Glen Fox, 26, said: ?It is sad to see him go but we are pleased because he will be so much happier at the Deep. it is really good of them to take him in.?

Glen, his twin brother Barry, and grandfather Alan Gillbanks bought Paco from a local pet shop two years ago.

Then just a few centimetres long, Glen saw Paco as the perfect addition to the store?s growing exotic aquarium.

Pet shop owners explained that Paco would grow bigger, but not how quickly and to what extent his growth spurt would be.

Glen spent last year travelling New Zealand but when he returned last week and saw Paco?s gargantuous frame, he knew he had to do something to help his beloved fish ? who is known as the company mascot to the delight of customers.

He contacted the Deep which backs the national big Fish Campaign, and the donation-lead charity organised a van to pick him up and take him to their 200,000 litre Amazon flooded forest-themed aquarium ? with lots of other black pacus and other exotic fish for Paco to play with.

And while Glen and Alan know they have done the right thing, it is not without sadness that they wave farewell to their friendly fish.

Alan said: ?We are devastated to see him go. People love talking to him, but we know it is the right thing to do.

?We are happy he is going to a new home where we know he will be looked after and everyone will love him.

?I feel very sentimental about Paco. he is such a character and when I realised he was getting too big I was worried about what we were going to do with him.

?A pet shop told us to put him down and have him for our dinner but how can you do that to a fish like Paco? I didn?t sleep very well that night.

?We are so grateful the Deep can help us.?

Glen said: ?he is like the business mascot and a great talking point for everyone who comes here. All the customers love him.?

Paco was forklifted into the back of the Deep?s van for the 45 minute journey over the water.

It is a scenario Andrew McLeod, assistant curator at the Deep, is seeing more often.

He said: ?We are receiving about five calls a month asking for us to rehome fish which have become too big for their tanks. it is a real shame.

?We try to do our best for animals and if we can take them on we will and if we can?t we will find someone who will help.?

Business Making Money Online | Affiliate Marketing

Would you like to be able to open your own business making money online? Online commerce has grown to be a dominating driving force in today?s economy. More people than ever are making profits, participating in buying and selling, and even building their own businesses online. The nature of the internet means that it?s a powerful tool for reaching out to the masses and creating real name recognition.

The speed and ease of access for the internet combines with it?s world wide reach to make a dream of reaching thousands or even hundreds of thousands of potential customers and business partners a solid reality for many businesses that wouldn?t have been able to otherwise. But how can you start a business making money online?

One of the most popular and powerful marketing and business tools that you find on the web is called Multi-Level Marketing, that harnesses the built in connections of the internet to build a business up. In these types of businesses, often related around providing a product or service, you recruit people into the company to work for you. Generally by providing them their initial training and introduction into the business, they will then become fully fledged affiliates in their own right.

Wanted: Sri Lanka hangman. Very light work. Only males need apply

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka on Tuesday began interviews for the post of hangman a year after two positions fell vacant, with at least 480 convicts on death row.

But it was not quite clear how the two successful candidates would fill their days - the death penalty has not been used in Sri Lanka, a predominantly Buddhist country, since 1976.

"About 176 applicants are there and interviews are going on today and tomorrow," Gamini Kulatunga, commissioner operations at the Prisons Department, told Reuters. "Only males will be eligible for the post."

The two posts fell vacant after one hangman was promoted and the other retired.

At least 480 people convicted of murder and drugs offences could potentially be executed, Kulatunga said.

There has been an alarming rise in child abuse, rapes, murders, and drug trafficking since the 25-year war against Tamil Tiger separatists ended in May 2009, prompting some lawyers and politicians to push for the death penalty to be reintroduced.

Convention Should Be All About Romney, Not Obama

With the Republican National Convention on the verge of convening, it seems appropriate to pause and do our own tracking of where the presidential race stands today and where it might move, depending upon the winds of Mitt Romney's campaign.

This race has been within the margin of error for four months. Nothing has really moved it at all. Not half a billion dollars in combined expenditures by all sides; not Romney's vice-presidential pick of Paul Ryan; not any speech by either President Obama or Romney. Not even Vice President Joe Biden opening his mouth.

Why? I would speculate there are three reasons. First, the country is incredibly divided and polarized, with few folks truly independent and undecided (some estimate there only about 5 percent of the country are truly swing voters in this election). So this race will trade in only a tiny margin and be very hard to move in big swings.

Also, there are major conflicting dynamics at work for each campaign indicating that these candidates, if they weren't running against each other, would be unelectable. On the Democratic side, there's the perception by a vast majority of voters that the country is on the wrong track and the incredible dissatisfaction with Obama's handling of the economy. For the Republicans, there's Romney's personal likeability being so low.

Finally, over the last ten years or so, the ability of campaigns to affect the overall narrative and dynamics of a presidential race has greatly diminished. Paid advertising, the campaigns' major expenditure, has become nearly useless and a total waste of money. Voters don't trust it and instead are looking for signals from sources they deem more credible. In a race like this, the big moments - the ones that matter - can move the polls. And we are about to have one of those.

This convention provides an opportunity and a possibility for Romney to grasp this moment. The only way he can do this is improve his personal standing with voters. He needs to get them to see him more positively as a leader and get them to trust that he has the their interests at heart. He needs to connect at a gut level with voters and shift their opinion of him from negative to at least neutral, if not positive. His campaign is making a mistake if they use this convention to primarily attack Obama. They need to make it about Mitt Romney.

The negative political environment that can beat Obama is in place; the only thing preventing that from happening is how Romney is perceived. If he can change that dynamic more positively, then he'll take a lead. Interestingly, he's the person who actually might have the most control over this race's direction. The president, after all, can't really change the direction of the country at this point, and perceptions of him are pretty locked in. If Romney is able to succeed, and the Obama campaign's onslaught diminishes in effectiveness, he could take control of this race.

As the convention unfolds, we'll see if Romney is able to do that, or if the Democrats are able to keep on their full-court press. If he can't, his next real shot is the first presidential debate at the beginning of October. Either way, as clouds cover Tampa, Romney needs to put a little daylight between himself and the president.

T.O. tweets he's 'no longer' with Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. (AP) ? Terrell Owens NFL return lasted less than three weeks.

Owens tweeted on Sunday that he is no longer a member of the Seattle Seahakws, part of the league-mandated roster reductions from 90 to 75 players. The 38-year-old posted a message on his Twitter account shortly before 11 a.m. PDT that he had been released.

"I'm no longer a Seahawk. I THANK the organization 4 the opportunity, I'm truly blessed beyond belief. My FAITH is intact & will NOT waiver."

Owens signed a one-year deal with Seattle (No. 22, APPro32) on Aug. 7, following a sterling workout that had coaches and Seahawks staff raving about how good he looked for having not played an NFL game in more than 18 months. He signed just before Seattle's first preseason game and made his debut in the second week against Denver.

But his preseason performance was more notable for the passes he dropped than anything he caught. Owens dropped a potential 46-yard touchdown against Denver on a perfect throw from Matt Flynn. He failed to make a catch in any of his five targets against the Broncos and then had another glaring drop against Kansas City on Friday night. He finished the preseason with just two receptions ? a 40-yard catch from Russell Wilson where Owens had to slow down and lean back to haul in the pass and a 1-yard reception on a screen.

For as impressive as his long catch was in Seattle's 44-14 win over the Chiefs, it served as Owens' only highlight in a Seahawks uniform.

Owens was trying to make a comeback after not playing since Week 15 of the 2010 season while with Cincinnati. He sat out the entire 2011 season following surgery on his left knee and failed to receive any offers. He then had surgery on his left knee and didn't receive any offers to play last season.

Owens got the rust off this spring playing for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. He had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing eight of 11 games, but was released and lost an ownership stake in the team in May.

Owens, a third-round draft choice by San Francisco in 1996, has started 201 of the 219 regular-season NFL games he has played in his career. He has 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns ? the second most in league history.

His nine seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving and 13 years with at least 50 catches rank third. His total receptions are sixth on the NFL career list. Owens spent eight seasons with San Francisco, two with Philadelphia, and three with Dallas before a pair of one-year stints with Buffalo and Cincinnati.

"I've been rehabbing and working out for the past year since the injury and that's all I've ever wanted since I've been out is another opportunity," Owens said following his first practice on Aug. 8. "That has been given to me by the Seattle Seahawks and again I am very grateful for that."

96% The Imposter

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (74) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

The real imposter here is the director.

A fascinating glimpse into the mind of a cunning con-man...and it's just as cunning as he was in constructing the story to hold our interest.

Trails off at the worst possible moment...its flaccid legal summary and closing visual manipulations are intentional, leaving audiences with a thoroughly sickening feeling to appreciate Bourdin's prolonged dance of narcissism.

Electronic cigarettes do not damage the heart, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Smoking is the most preventable risk factor for cardiac and lung disease and is expected to cause 1 billion deaths during the 21st century. Electronic cigarettes have been marketed in recent years as a safer habit for smokers, with several millions of people already using them worldwide.

Electronic cigarettes simulate the effect of smoking by producing an inhaled vapor. The device consists of a battery, a cartridge containing liquid and a heating element which gets warm and evaporates the liquid. Laboratory analyses of the liquids show that they are less toxic than regular cigarettes. Most studies have found no nitrosamines, but even in studies where nitrosamines were found, the levels detected were 500-1400 times less than the amount present in one tobacco cigarette. This means that electronic cigarettes must be used daily for 4-12 months to get the amount of nitrosamines present in a single tobacco cigarette.

Since heart disease is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in smokers, with 40% of deaths in smokers due to coronary artery disease alone, the research team decided to perform the first clinical study of the acute effects of electronic cigarettes on cardiac function. They decided to compare their results with the acute effects of regular cigarettes on cardiac function since electronic cigarettes are marketed to smokers only, as an alternative habit.

Previous studies from the research group and several others have shown that acute smoking inhalation produces significant defects in myocardial function. This indicates that subclinical dysfunction is already present in apparently healthy asymptomatic young people who smoke tobacco cigarettes. The goal was to evaluate whether these signs of preclinical disease appear in a similar population after using electronic cigarettes.

The researchers measured myocardial function in 20 healthy young daily smokers aged 25-45 years before and after smoking one tobacco cigarette and 22 daily electronic cigarette users of similar age before and after using the device for 7 minutes.

Experienced users of electronic cigarettes were studied because they use the device more intensively than first-time users. Although both groups were of equal age, users of electronic cigarettes had a 44% higher lifetime tobacco smoking exposure compared to current smokers.

For the electronic cigarettes, a commercially available liquid with a nicotine concentration of 11mg/ml was used (NOBACCO USA Mix). This was tested by an independent toxicology laboratory and found to contain no nitrosamines or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Myocardial function was examined using cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) and hemodynamic measurements (blood pressure and heart rate).

The researchers found that smoking one tobacco cigarette led to significant acute myocardial dysfunction but electronic cigarettes had no acute adverse effects on cardiac function. Smoking a tobacco cigarette had important hemodynamic consequences, with significant increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and in heart rate. In contrast, electronic cigarettes produced only a slight elevation in diastolic blood pressure. Dr Farsalinos said: "This is an indication that although nicotine was present in the liquid used (11mg/ml), it is absorbed at a lower rate compared to regular cigarette smoking."

The echocardiography examination focused on the function of the left ventricle, the part of the heart that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs (filling or diastolic phase) and then delivers the blood to the whole body (pumping or systolic phase). The investigators found significant defects in the diastolic phase of left ventricular function after smoking one cigarette, with four echocardiographic parameters indicating worsening function. In contrast, none of the echocardiographic parameters showed any significant worsening in subjects after using the electronic cigarette. "Diastolic dysfunction is very important because it is usually the first defect that is detected before any clinically-evident cardiac disease develops," said Dr Farsalinos.

He added: "It is too early to say whether the electronic cigarette is a revolution in tobacco harm reduction but the potential is there. It is the only available product that deals with both the chemical (nicotine delivery) and psychological (inhaling and exhaling 'smoke', holding it, etc) addiction to smoking, laboratory analyses indicate that it is significantly less toxic and our study has shown no significant defects in cardiac function after acute use."

Dr Farsalinos continued: "More clinical studies need to be done before suggesting that this is a revolutionary product. However, considering the extreme hazards associated with cigarette smoking, currently available data suggest that electronic cigarettes are far less harmful and substituting tobacco with electronic cigarettes may be beneficial to health."

Bigg Boss 6 could include children and teens! | Bollywood-Stop

It has lately been reported that for the new more entertaining avatar of Bigg Boss, the show's makers are going to open the doors for the common man, giving him chance to participate in the show's coming extravaganza Bigg Boss Season 6.

By now, these reports may have already fired up the hopes and dreams of audiences and raised people's expectations of a possibility for being on India's biggest reality show this season.

Hearing of this development, Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar who has handled the media affairs for Shilpa Shetty during Big Brother and some of the most controversial Bigg Boss contestants from time to time, including Rakhi Sawant, Kashmera Shah, Sambhavna Seth, Vindu Dara Singh, Sherlyn Chopra, Ashmit Patel, Amar Upadhyay and Pooja Misrra, feels Bigg Boss could also target kids and teens and gain more popularity with their patronage.

`Apart from possibly generating a lot of hype and eyeballs, this could also help the show in the longer run, as when the kids grow older, the show's fanbase could also grow,` Dale analyses. `In fact, there could be a separate enclosure specially constructed for kids or maybe a separate playhouse where they could make merry,` he suggests.

`If this happens, then Bigg Boss might be able to change its late night timings and come in a prime time slot along with megastar Salman Khan interacting with children and youth,` Dale adds.

It can be noted that earlier superstars like Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have successfully changed gears to attract kids and teens with films like Koi... Mil Gaya, Dhoom, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Krrish, Don, Ra.One, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots.

Let's see if Bigg Boss could manage the same trick and reap similar benefits!

Mesothelioma - Your Basic Information | How to Cancer

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is becoming more and more common. The most common cause of this cancer is exposure to asbestos. When constantly exposed with insufficient protection, asbestos dust and fibres affect the mesothelial cells which make up the mesothelium.

The mesothelium is the outer lining that protects some of the body?s most vital organs such as the heart and lungs. The mesothelial cells become abnormal after lengthy periods of constant exposure to asbestos causing an array of problems.

Due to the latency period and symptoms of this cancer, mesothelioma is very difficult to diagnose. Mesothelioma takes decades to mature and develop fully and this is why many elderly men who were exposed to asbestos thirty years before are just discovering they have the cancer.

A lot of these men are currently lodging multi-million dollar lawsuits against the companies that exposed them to the dangers of asbestos without sufficient protection.

The organs that are affected most by mesotheliomas are the lungs. The most common type of mesotheliomas which is called pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and can cause symptoms such as coughing, breathing and swallowing difficulties, shortness of breath and fever.

Another area that can be affected by mesothelioma is the abdomen. This is less common and this is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea and vomiting, weight loss, fever, bowel obstruction, loss of appetite and general pain in the stomach area.

The last and least common type of mesotheliomas is known as pericardial mesothelioma and it affects the heart and the tissue surrounding it. Symptoms of this form of the cancer include palpitations, breathing difficulties and persistent coughing.

Generally, the symptoms of mesotheliomas are typical of many other diseases and this makes it very difficult to diagnose.

There are treatments for mesothelioma although these are usually unsuccessful. If the cancer is treated aggressively in its early stages then there is a good chance of a patient surviving.

However, due to the difficulty to diagnose mesothelioma, the cancer is not normally found until it is too late. Treatments that are used for mesotheliomas include surgery, radiation therapy, palliative therapy and chemotherapy.

Research for additional treatment of mesothelioma is being done at various cancer centers all over the United States as well as by pharmaceutical companies.

(AP) ? Over six frightening months, a deadly germ untreatable by most antibiotics spread in the nation's leading research hospital. Pretty soon, a patient a week was catching the bug. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health locked down patients, cleaned with bleach, even ripped out plumbing ? and still the germ persisted.

By the end, 18 people harbored the dangerous germ, and six died of bloodstream infections from it. Another five made it through the outbreak only to die from the diseases that brought them to NIH's world-famous campus in the first place.

It took gene detectives teasing apart the bacteria's DNA to solve the germ's wily spread, a CSI-like saga with lessons for hospitals everywhere as they struggle to contain the growing threat of superbugs.

It all stemmed from a single patient carrying a fairly new superbug known as KPC ? Klebsiella pneumoniae that resists treatment by one of the last lines of defense, antibiotics called carbapenems.

"We never want this to happen again," said Dr. Tara Palmore, deputy hospital epidemiologist at the NIH Clinical Center.

Infections at health care facilities are one of the nation's leading causes of preventable death, claiming an estimated 99,000 lives a year. They're something of a silent killer, as hospitals fearful of lawsuits don't like to publicly reveal when they outfox infection control ? yet no hospital is immune.

Wednesday, government researchers published an unusually candid account of last year's outbreak, with some advice: Fast sequencing of a germ's genome, its full DNA, may be essential. It can reveal how drug-resistant bacteria are spreading so that doctors can protect other patients.

"This is not an easy story to tell," said Dr. Julie Segre, a senior investigator at NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute. She led the genetic sleuthing that found the bug hiding in sink drains and, most chilling, even in a ventilator that had been cleaned with bleach.

Infection-control specialists at other hospitals called this detailed anatomy of an outbreak, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, important to share.

"They were able to demonstrate that this sneaky little bug was able to stay alive and get transmitted in ways they hadn't quite predicted before they had the detailed genetic information," said Dr. Sara Cosgrove, associate hospital epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University. "It's very revealing."

"Absolutely this could happen in any hospital," said Dr. Deverick Anderson, co-director of a Duke University infection control network that advises smaller community hospitals.

"This is really exciting stuff, cutting-edge technology, to try and better understand how these infections get spread," he added. That in turn may lead to new protections, important because "there's something that's very, very wrong about going to a hospital and becoming more ill."

Normally, the Klebsiella bacteria live in human intestines and don't harm people with healthy immune systems. But the multidrug-resistant strain named KPC has emerged over the past decade to become a fast-growing threat in intensive care units, spreading easily between very ill people and killing half of those it sickens. Worse, people can carry KPC without symptoms unless the germs slip into the urinary tract or bloodstream ? theirs or the person's in the next bed ? through a catheter or surgical wound.

The 243-bed NIH Clinical Center, in Washington's suburbs, is a unique hospital, only treating people enrolled in government research studies.

So on June 13, 2011, a research nurse carefully checked the medical records as a New York City hospital transferred a study participant who had become critically ill with a rare lung disease. The nurse found that the patient had KPC as well.

The woman went into strict isolation: Everyone entering her room donned a protective gown and gloves and rigorously washed their hands. Her medical equipment got special decontamination. All other patients in the ICU had their throats and groins tested regularly to see if the bug was spreading.

All seemed OK. The woman recovered, and went home on July 15.

Fast forward three weeks. Now a man with cancer has KPC despite never crossing paths with Patient No. 1. Ten days later, a woman with an immune disease fell ill, too. Both died of the infection.

Did they arrive carrying their own KPC bacteria, or did that first patient's germ somehow escape into the hospital? Standard tests couldn't tell. Segre, the geneticist, turned to DNA.

As bacteria multiply, mistakes appear and are repaired in their genetic code. Sequencing that genome allowed Segre to follow differences in single genetic letters like a trail of the germ's transmission and evolution.

Sure enough, the KPC originated from the New York patient despite NIH's precautions. Testing bacteria from the 17 additional patients who ultimately caught it shows the KPC was transmitted three separate times from Patient No. 1, and then spread more widely.

Even this sophisticated technology couldn't prove exactly how transmission occurred. But it turns out that Patient 3 had been in the ICU at the same time as the New York woman and really was the next infected, silently carrying the bug longer before becoming sick. That was enough time for Patient 3's infection to spread to Patient 2, who just got sick faster.

Meanwhile, NIH was making big changes. All the ICU patients underwent more invasive testing, using rectal swabs, to check for silent germ carriers. A new wall created a separate ICU to house them. Doctors, nurses, even janitors assigned there could work nowhere else, and monitors were paid to make sure everyone followed infection-control rules.

Yet a patient a week was either becoming infected or found to be a silent carrier of the same KPC strain.

"Honestly, we were very scared at that point," Segre recalled.

Test after test never found the bug on hospital workers' hands. Tainted objects like the ventilator couldn't be ruled out ? but NIH adopted more complex and expensive decontamination, using robot-like machines to spray germ-killing hydrogen peroxide into the tiniest of crevices in all affected rooms and equipment.

Still, November brought more bad news: The outbreak strain had escaped the ICU, as two patients who'd never been there now were carrying it. A new isolation room was built, and all 200-plus patients in the hospital started undergoing rectal testing.

The outbreak now is over, the last carrier found in December. But NIH isn't dropping its guard. The isolation room remains, used every time one of the seven outbreak survivors returns to the hospital for their ongoing research studies ? because they still carry the strain. Those rectal tests continue, hospital-wide once a month, to be sure no new KPC strain sneaks in.

Bacterial sequencing is becoming fast and cheap enough for most large hospitals to use during tough outbreaks, said Dr. Lance Peterson, microbiology and infectious disease director at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill.

But another lesson is how much it takes to guard against these bugs sneaking in in the first place. Peterson said his hospital does weekly rectal testing of every ICU patient as a precaution.

"There's better technology becoming available for your hospital to prevent these bacteria from spreading, and this is what you should expect from your hospital," he said.
