Art Education Blog for K-12 Art Teachers | SchoolArtsRoom: A ...

?

Tomorrow I am excited to?leave for Tucson for the Arizona Art Education Association Conference?where I will be giving three presentations, one of which is?on celebrating the Mexican Days of the Dead, November 1 and 2. One of the days of our SchoolArt/CRIZMAC Folk Art Extravaganza, held in July in Santa Fe, focuses on the Days of the Dead. I thought I would share one of the projects we do there that I will be introducing at the conference.

?

It starts with a skeleton head, 3-4 inches tall, here made of Model Magic (though other modeling compounds could be used). Permanent markers work well for color and beads, sequins, and other materials can be embedded in the form. Thread spools and clay tools can be used to add depth and texture.

?

Once the skull is complete, it is set aside to dry and work begins on the skeleton. White paper straws work well for this as they can be flattened and glued easily (Artstraws are available from art supply catalogs). In my art room, I would borrow the school's skeleton from the science lab and keep it in my room in October for reference. You could also provide diagrams of the skeleton to help students with bone placement. We started with the spine, added ribs and pelvis, then jointed arms and legs.

?

?

In Mexico, papier mache and clay skeletons appear for this celebration?dressed in clothes or uniforms that denote a profession, suggesting that all are equal in death and will meet the same fate (but lightheartedly!) I ask my students to do the same for their paper figures.

?

?

The Monarch butterfly wings are a nice touch here, since they spend the winter in Central Mexico thickly clustered in trees, arriving around the time of the Days of the Dead. This person forgot to add the lower part of the arms. Once the head is relatively dry, it can be glued on the skeleton.

?

?

Here is a wonderful example of extending the lesson. Happy Days of the Dead! November 1 and 2!

Outages, floods hit two New Jersey refineries; others restart

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The second-largest refinery on the East Coast has suffered "some" flooding and a power outage from Hurricane Sandy, while two smaller plants also lost power, as glitches threaten to slow the recovery in fuel supplies.

While the region's biggest plant, in Philadelphia, and several others were ramping up operations after escaping damage, other facilities, pipelines and terminals were struggling to restore supplies that had slowed to a trickle.

Phillips 66 said there was "some flooding in low-lying areas" of its 238,000-barrels-per-day Bayway, New Jersey plant, which had been shut on Monday as a precaution. The plant remains closed, the company said, and utility PSE&G said power was likely to be restored only in 24 to 48 hours.

News of trouble at Bayway, nicknamed the "gasoline machine" for its key role in supplying motor fuel to the New York City area, pared losses in gasoline futures, which had fallen by more than 2 percent as output recovered elsewhere.

Other power-related glitches also surfaced after the storm, which left more than 8 million customers without electricity.

As the storm moved north, a power outage shut Imperial Oil's 121,000-bpd Sarnia, Ontario refinery, but the company said it expected to restart units later in the day.

Hess Corp's 70,000-bpd Port Reading, New Jersey refinery, which had also shut ahead of Sandy, lost power and had no time frame for restarting.

Colonial Pipeline, a conduit that supplies as much as 15 percent of the East Coast's 5.2 million bpd of gasoline, diesel and fuel demand from Gulf Coast refiners, said the line had suffered no operational damage, but it had lost power at its Linden, New Jersey tank farm. It is bringing in portable generators to resume pumping fuel back to the region.

The flooding at Bayway, which had been seen by experts as the most vulnerable to Sandy's record 13-foot (4-meter) storm surge and subsequent power outages, is a potential second nightmare for Phillips 66, which had struggled to restore its Alliance, Louisiana refinery after Hurricane Isaac in August. That storm pushed more than 2 feet of floodwater into the plant.

PHILLY PLANTS SEEN OK

Operations in the Philadelphia area appeared set to resume quickly. Philadelphia Energy Solutions' 330,000-bpd refinery, the biggest in the region, escaped damage and was restoring operations at the Point Breeze half of the plant that was shut, the company said, confirming an earlier Reuters report.

Industry group Genscape said its infrared cameras detected the restart of key crude and vacuum distillation units.

Delta Air Lines subsidiary Monroe Energy's 185,000-bpd Trainer, Pennsylvania plant continued operating through the storm, and was expected to reach full rates next week after a maintenance overhaul, a source said.

PBF Energy is expected to ramp up its Delaware City refinery after minimal run-cuts later on Tuesday, a source said. Genscape said it had detected elevated levels of flaring at the Delaware City facility overnight; IIR Energy said the plant experienced a minor power blip, but was expected to resume normal output as soon as weather permitted. PBF had also curbed rates at its 180,000-bpd Paulsboro plant in southern New Jersey.

The precautionary refinery closures were more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

John Auers, senior vice president and refining specialist at Turner, Mason & Co. in Dallas, said East Coast plants, even those near the water, are better protected from potential flood damage than those that suffered weeks-long outages on the Gulf Coast following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita seven years ago.

Even so, even minor flooding can be a concern and plants without sufficient on-site generators may have to wait for utilities to restore outside power. The largest risk may simply lie in restarting vast, intense equipment.

"You're talking about heating up oil to fairly high temperatures, putting it through processing units at high pressure," said Auers. "Anytime you interrupt that steady-state there is always the potential for issues."

The vast network of terminals and smaller pipelines that serves the region - seen as a potentially greater danger than refinery outages - was also being assessed.

NuStar Energy said it could not access its Linden, New Jersey terminal, while Magellan Midstream Partners said it would resume loading at two truck racks in Delaware and Connecticut later in the day.

DEMAND IN FOCUS

Barring major damage, most experts expected the region's fuel supplies could bounce back quickly after being almost completely halted ahead of Sandy, which came ashore on Monday evening with winds of up to 90 miles per hour (145 km per hour) and the storm surge, causing widespread power outages.

Benchmark New York gasoline futures prices, which rallied more than 6 percent ahead of the storm as traders feared a disruption in supplies, were still down 1 percent or three cents on Tuesday as the focus shifted to the likely cut in fuel consumption due to grounded flights and empty roads. U.S. crude oil futures rose slightly, reversing Monday's dip.

"For the moment you have a big black hole where there used to be oil demand," said Credit Suisse oil analyst Jan Stuart. He said 80 percent of the region's demand in the New York metropolitan area had been affected somehow.

"In the end, the demand deficit outweighs the supply deficit."

Airlines had canceled more than 15,770 flights in the past four days, flight-tracking service FlightAware said. Jet fuel consumption of an estimated 170,000 bpd at the three major New York area airports ground to a halt.

One trader offering to sell physical cargoes in the New York Harbor market found no buyers on Monday.

Major ports that supply the area with some 1 million bpd of imported fuel were starting to reopen. The Port of Boston opened without restrictions and was expected to unload a gasoline cargo later on Tuesday, an official said.

Chrome Remote Desktop comes out of beta, adds functionality to Chromebooks

After a year of living in beta, Chrome Remote Desktop is finally ready for primetime. Similar to other screen sharing services like LogMeIn and Splashtop, Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access other computers remotely. Of course, it is special to the Chrome browser, and by extension, the Chrome OS. The latest version of the app adds a couple of new features like a real-time audio feed for Windows users and the ability to copy-and-paste between remote and local computers. You can use this with any Chrome browser of course, but it could prove especially useful for those with Chromebooks, as you can easily communicate with a presumably storage-laden home PC while still toting around a lightweight notebook.

Can we be harmed after we die? - Business ethics and other thoughts

In the last few weeks two news stories have been particularly prominent. The first concerns the revelations that erstwhile national treasure Jimmy Savile was actually a predatory paedophile who took advantage of his position as a prominent broadcaster and charity fundraiser to sexually abuse women and children, particularly the vulnerable.

The second concerns cycling legend and seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who has finally been exposed as orchestrating ??the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program? in sport.

Both stories have traced the public fall from grace of two figures who not long ago were idolised. Both, in their different ways, are now widely despised.

There is one significant different between the two situations, however, and this is that Jimmy Savile died last year, while Lance Armstrong is still alive. The coincidence of their shamings bring into focus a tricky question concerning the nature of harm. There are many different accounts of what constitutes human well-being, but on?many of them an individual must be alive in order for their life to go better or worse ? once you are dead, nothing can harm you.

Such accounts rely on the seemingly unobjectionable thought that if an event in no way affects the experiences that the individual has, then it cannot plausibly harm them. Examples of such approaches include hedonistic theories of well-being that focus on experiences of pleasure and pain, theories that have, for example, underpinned well known theories of ethics such as Mill?s Utilitarianism.

On this account, Lance Armstrong has suffered significant (deserved) harm from the revelations about his behaviour, while Jimmy Savile has not. Another way of putting it would be that Savile ?got away with? his (alleged) crimes.

But is this entirely true? These two examples provide an interesting case study for what is known as the ?posthumous harm thesis?, the idea that individuals can, in fact, be harmed after they are dead (for more on this, see section 3 here). One way to support this thesis would be to base well-being and harm in the extent to which an individual?s desires are satisfied, and further to claim that such desire satisfaction is still significant posthumously ? it is perfectly possible, for example, for someone to desire when alive that they will be remembered fondly when dead.

There are of course objections to these claims, in particular the Epicurean challenge that, roughly, an event can only affect us causally but that we do not exist to be affected when we are dead, and an event cannot causally affect something in the past (us while we were alive).

This is a pretty compelling objection. Yet we can also make an argument that the value of a life for that individual should be assessed as a whole, standing back from any particular temporal position. And if we do that, then it is not clear that the event occurring after death is so irrelevant to how well their life has gone for them.

It is certainly tempting to think that, for Jimmy Savile, life has gone very badly over the last few weeks, even though he is dead. And therefore he did not, entirely, get away with it.

The Post where I Share my Fitness Vision

I?ve had it on my heart for quite awhile now that I want to make fitness a bigger part of my life. Not just in the sense that I want to run more half marathons, do a triathlon and so forth but I want to give back. I?m lucky enough that I can work a very small amount of extra money that I earn toward a gym membership, new workout clothes and shoes as they are needed. Not everyone has that opportunity and not everyone has the means, knowledge or access to that.

I really want to change that.

A small confession?about 95% of my IRL community don?t know that I have a blog. They don?t know about my passion, my writing, my?endeavors. I?ve had a few people that do know about it ask me over the last two years a) how I make time b) what I do and c) can I help them. I?m extremely proud to be asked but I?ve always?shied away because I don?t have any formal training and don?t want to be held accountable should something happen because of my lack of training/experience.

I really want to change that as well.

In comes the vision that?s been becoming more and more clear to me lately:

I want to get a personal trainer certification and group exercise certification. I want to do some teaching at a gym in my area. Most importantly, I want to offer my services extremely discounted or free to those in my community (especially moms) who don?t have access or the means to get into shape.

I firmly believe that everyone has the right to be the best, healthiest and happiest they can be. I believe that health and fitness shouldn?t be reserved for those financially able. Disease doesn?t discriminate and neither should health and fitness.

My vision grows by the day. If you stepped inside of my head, you?d be overwhelmed by my vision. I know I am. My brain is about to explode with possibility.

I needed to share this because I?m going out of my mind. I need to think, ponder, scheme and then start saving so that I can afford the certifications I would need. This could take months or years to get off the ground, if I can make it happen.

Have you ever had a vision or dream so big you didn?t know what to do with it? Have you made your dream a reality? How did you do it (translation: HELP!!)

?

I am a mom to 2 beautiful boys and love everything health and fitness. I am dedicated to improving my own health, setting a good example for healthy living for my family and hopefully inspiring and educating others to do the same in their lives.

Conveyance is a major issue for people residing in Tier I cities. However, by introducing India?s first metered radio cabs under the name Meru Cabs, Neeraj Gupta offered a solution that made every traveler?s journey fast, safe and pleasurable.

In this entrepreneur interview, Neeraj Gupta traces his journey from starting a garage to becoming the MD of the 3rd largest ?Radio Taxi? company in the world. No wonder, Meru Cabs is the only company in India to have won the ?Best IT User Awards? by NASSCOM CNBC TV-18 in 2008, 2009 & 2010.

Q: Can you tell us how you got started from an old garage in Oshiwara, Mumbai.

Till the time I got married at the age of 24 I was trying my hands at odd jobs and not doing anything substantial or material. After marriage, I realized it was high time I settle down with some business that is concrete and gives me full time occupation. With a loan of Rs.50000/- from my wife, I ventured into an automobile garage with a partner who had the technical expertise of running a garage.

With the limited capital in hand, opening a road side garage seemed to be the best option at that time. I managed the sales & marketing side of the business and very soon we had a long list of corporate and retail clients for our business

Q: When and how did Meru Cabs happen?

In the year 2000, I had ventured into staff transportation business with a single mini bus contract and later expanded on pan India basis with a fleet of 1300 vehicles by the year 2006. By this time, the clients were demanding newer vehicles fitted with technology and competition was also brewing from un-organized players.

During that year Govt. of Maharashtra had come out with a tender to offer license to operate radio taxis in Mumbai. This was a unique opportunity for us as we could enter the retail segment under this scheme and had the fall back arrangement of corporate business to keep us afloat till the retail business starts kicking in for us.

Q: What were the key challenges you faced while starting Meru Cabs?

There were quite a few challenge in this business model and hence not many looked at this opportunity.

1. The license was for 10000 taxis that means it required a huge capital investment and ability to manage such a large fleet.

2. The main condition was to obtain the existing black& yellow taxi permits on lease which was a completely unchartered territory with no clue as to how that will be managed.

3. The segment was highly un-organized with a challenge to train and develop drivers from the black & yellow segment, own and maintain such a large fleet which was never done in India before.

4. Since the market was dominated by the black & yellow taxis, there was a fear of back lash and resistance from the taxi drivers and unions.

We faced all the above issues but managed to overcome them over a period of time

Q: What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who are planning to start a capital intensive business?

Access to capital ? first through own resources then debt and lastly through equity is the pre-requisite. To enter a capital intensive business one must evaluate his strengths and challenges in the business he wishes to enter. Understanding of the market and its potential to get a share of the market is very important.

Ability to sustain is the key to success. Complete commitment to the venture by the entrepreneur and a stable management team to operate a large business is a must for a capital intensive business.

Concluding part of this interview will be published next week. Stay tuned!

Proflight Simulator: The Best Option in 3d Flight Simulator Software

Flying and manoeuvring aircrafts can really be fun. But at the same time, it can really be tricky and dangerous. So for the avid fans and enthusiasts of flying aircrafts, using flight simulator software would be the next best option.

Technology has really come a long way. The various advancements as well as innovations in technology have had far-reaching effects in various aspects of man?s life. Whether it is in the field of communication, information, entertainment or business and commerce, the products of technology have really changed the playing field. They have provided a lot of benefits to mankind.

One of the many products of technology that is becoming more and more popular and useful nowadays is the flight simulator software. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of brands and companies in the market today that are offering 3d flight simulator software. One of which is the Proflight simulator.

The fact is, the Proflight Simulator software is hailed by a lot of users as well as experts alike to be one of the best, if not the best, flight simulator software available today. Actually, this does not really come as a surprise since this product comes with a lot of features that puts it at an advantage over its competitors. To give you a clearer idea about that, here are some of the pertinent information about this flight simulator software.

There are actually a lot to love about the Proflight Simulator software.

For one, it is a real flight simulator that will give you the closest experience possible to actual flying and manoeuvering an aircraft. This is actually the goal of the manufacturers of this software. The various features of this flight simulator will give you an experience that is as close as possible to real life.

For instance, this software is actually powered by Google Maps. Thus, the areas that you will traverse are actually more or less the same as the ones that you will see in real life. More so, even the alignment as well as the movements of the planets is patterned after the real deal. Even the weather is in real time. So if it is raining in one particular area of the Earth, that will be reflected in this flight simulator.

Another good point about the Proflight Simulator software is the fact that it comes with free updates. As a matter of fact, these updates are valid for life and they are offered for free. Thus, you can be assured that you will always receive the newest contents of this software. Plus, the package for this software also comes with other bonuses like a flight planner as well as interactive scenery designer which will make the experience even a lot more fun and interesting.

And lastly, this flight simulator software also comes with a money back guarantee for 60 days. So if you are not satisfied with the product, you can give it back to the dealer and get a full refund.

But of course, the Proflight Simulator software also has its downsides. For one, it will really take time to download the entire package. It may even take a couple of hours. Plus, it can be a bit overwhelming at first because of the many features and selection. However, items are categorized to guide you along the way.

FTC enlists consumers to help stop robocalls

Don't like those annoying automated telemarketing calls?

Well, now's your chance to do something about it.

The Federal Trade Commission is looking for tech-savvy individuals to come up with a product to thwart so-called "robocalls" from harassing helpless citizens.

In fact, the FTC, which oversees the Federal Do Not Call list (which has a whopping 217 million people on it), is so frustrated that it's offering a $50,000 prize for the best technical solution to stop those unwanted calls.

Between October 2011 and September 2012, the FTC received 2,260,021 robocall-related complaints, said spokesperson Cheryl Hackley.

"We're trying to tap into the technological expertise and innovation that's out there of the American public," said Kari Daffan, a staff attorney with the FTC, adding that there's "nothing that currently exists in the marketplace."

Robocalls typically originate overseas and are illegal under the 2009 Telemarketing Sales Rule, which stipulates that a consumer must give written permission to receive a call from that entity.

"That doesn't happen too much, if ever," said Daffan. "The vast majority of these calls are just scam artists. They're just making a buck, and they often do it off of the most vulnerable consumers, like the elderly or those who do have debt."

Not only will solvers get a cash prize, but they can also retain intellectual property rights to their idea. Companies with more than 10 employees are able to compete for the FTC's Commission Technology Achievement Award. (No cash prize, alas). The agency, in turn, will have the right to feature the solution's name, text description and images on its website.

The " FTC Robocall Challenge" opens to the public on Oct. 25 and closes Jan. 17, 2013. The winner will be announced in April.

Good Government Groups Accuse Arizona Non-profit With Laundering

(At left) Common Cause Advocate Phillip Ung told Capitol reporters earlier this year that California corporations? political spending outstrips labor unions? by a wide margin.

California Common Cause and the League of Women Voters during a Friday morning teleconference accused Americans for Responsible Leadership, an Arizona non-profit organization that has reportedly donated more than $11 million to the Small Business PAC that is underwriting the Pro-Proposition 32 campaign, of violating six-month old California campaign rules that require disclosure of donors when funds are earmarked for a specific purpose.

The organizations plan to file a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) that could require the out-of-state non-profit under pressure of subpoena to produce documents showing who provided the funds.

Common Cause Vice President Derek Cressman sketched out for reporters a ?web? of intrigue that links donors including the Koch brothers to the donations that have been given by the out-of-state non-profit.

Phillip Ung, of Common Cause, said the California regulations enacted six months ago were designed to force disclosure of donors by out-of-state organizations that are seeking to influence California politics.

Common Cause is asserting that the Arizona non-profit corporation has also failed to meet corporate filing requirements of Arizona, let alone the new regulations in California.

Common Cause officials say they believe the filing will show that the corporation was a small organization with less than a million dollars but suddenly received an infusion of funds on the order of $200 million. The Arizona Corporation suddenly this week dropped $11 million into the Small Business Action Committee, which is the main source of funds for Proposition 32, the CTA-opposed Special Exemptions Act. ?Ung also told reporters that the Small Business Action Committee is also a major funder of the efforts to defeat Proposition 30, the governor?s revenue measure designed to fund schools and stave off some $6 billion in trigger cuts.

During the teleconference on last-minute out-of-state donations of $11 million, Ung called the donation the ?single largest, non-disclosed? donation from out of state?and the ?second largest donation? from an out of state organization.

Trudy Schafer, of the League of Women Voters, said she wanted to put the donation in the?context?of the campaigns right now. ?Common cause and the League are strongly no on 32.? It is ironic that the proponents of Prop. 32 are advertising it as an initiative stopping special?interests, but special interest money is being poured into California within three weeks of the election in support of it,? Schafer said.

These corporations would be ?untouched by Prop. 32,? Schafer said.? ?We?d like to see campaign reform but this is not campaign reform.?

Ung said disclosure of donation sources is vital so that voters can make informed choices. ?If you know the money [for an initiative] is coming from a Molly Munger or a Charles Munger, voters can take that into consideration.? When it?s coming from a black box, they can?t.?

Stuck In Reverse?

Wednesday Sep 26

Have you ever been asked for your opinion by someone on something they do, only to have it rejected? How does that make you feel?

As a supplier, honest feedback about your product or service is absolutely vital. Only if you know what people think of you can you make decisions and take action to improve your business.

All good suppliers regularly ask their customers for feedback. Many suppliers are tempted, when they receive feedback that doesn't "fit", to rationalise and justify what they do to the customer who has been good enough to provide that feedback.

Reverse that!

They know how they feel when they have feedback rejected - so the same applies when they reject feedback.

My tip is this; however much you don't like the message, always receive feedback openly and gratefully. That way you will be told what you really need to hear!

Momentum delivers business growth solutions designed specifically for the needs of our clients, from SMEs to major corporates.

Momentum's Tender Services provides specialist support to businesses and organisations bidding for formal contracts and tenders.

Aggressive ads keep abortion in campaign spotlight

NEW YORK (AP) ? Though Barack Obama and Mitt Romney rarely tackle the topic of abortion head-on, the void is being filled by rival advocacy groups targeting swing states with ads depicting one or the other candidate as an extremist in his stance on the divisive issue.

Obama, according to the National Right to Life Committee, is "the most pro-abortion president this country has ever seen." Another anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List, is running anti-Obama TV ads titled "Abortion Radical."

From the other side, groups supporting legal access to abortion, as well as the Obama campaign itself, depict Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as eager to ban most abortions as part of a Republican "war on women." The GOP ticket "is extremely dangerous to women's health," says Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Numerous polls indicate that abortion and other hot-button social issues aren't top priorities for most Americans as they worry about jobs and health care. Yet abortion is a visceral subject for some voters ? and the extent to which they turn out to vote, and perhaps sway wavering acquaintances, could make a difference in pivotal swing states.

There's extra intensity this year because Obama and Romney ? reflecting their party platforms ? are so polarized in regard to abortion.

Obama believes decisions about abortion should be left to women and their doctors. He affirmed this outlook during his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention, where the prime-time speakers included Keenan and Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Romney opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life, and says the Supreme Court should repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion. He also would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, which is a major provider of abortion and contraception.

"There are such sharp differences between the two candidates, it's not surprising the advocacy groups are so engaged," said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University in the swing state of Virginia. "They think other voters must feel the same way."

Planned Parenthood, through its political action affiliates, has spent more on this election than any in the past ? more than $12 million, with about half the money going for TV ads in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and other battleground states.

Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said a large chunk of the funds had been donated by new contributors eager to fight back against Republican efforts to restrict abortion at the state and federal level.

"People have woken up and said, 'Not only are they serious, but they're close to imposing their will on the women of America,'" Laguens said.

Among the biggest spenders on the anti-abortion side is the Susan B. Anthony List. Along with its political action committees, it has reported more than $3 million in expenditures, including TV ads in Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Colorado.

The group's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said the ads seek to depict Obama as an extremist in regard to abortion and to woo undecided, socially conservative Democrats, including Hispanics.

"It's hard to argue that the 'war on women' theme has stuck," Dannenfelser said. "The gender gap has closed since the first debate, and the women's vote is the most fluid I've seen."

Some of the swing states experienced controversies earlier this year that put a spotlight on abortion even before the presidential race heated up.

In Ohio, the Legislature held hearings on a bill that would impose the nation's most severe abortion restrictions, outlawing most abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The bill stalled, but its supporters hope to revive it after the election.

Janet Folger Porter, president of the conservative advocacy group Faith2Action, is a leading backer of the so-called "heartbeat bill" and also released a video this month denouncing Obama.

"You can question where Gov. Romney stands, but there's no question where President Obama stands on life," says Porter, depicting Obama's stance as "pro-death."

Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL's Ohio affiliate, said debate over the heartbeat bill raised voter awareness of abortion-related issues.

"This is really on a lot of Ohioans' minds," she said. "They want to know where the candidates stand."

The issue also is figuring in Ohio's Senate race, with Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown, a firm supporter of legal access to abortion, and Republican challenger Josh Mandel, an advocate of outlawing it.

In Virginia, there was a surge of protests earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill requiring women to undergo pre-abortion sonograms. Initially, it mandated a vaginally invasive procedure, drawing charges from female Democratic legislators that it amounted to "state mandated rape."

The provision was removed at Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's urging after the bill was mocked on national TV comedy shows. But the controversy had staying power ? a Democratic legislative candidate in North Carolina has run a TV ad in which she brandishes a transvaginal wand in an effort to capitalize on the anti-abortion views of her GOP opponent.

Abortion also has been a prominent issue in Missouri's Senate race since Republican candidate Todd Akin ? a foe of abortion ? remarked in August that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape." He later called the comment a mistake, but Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has aired anti-Akin ads featuring testimonials from women who said they were raped, including one who describes herself as a "pro-life" Republican.

Rozell, the George Mason professor, said the abortion debate could play a crucial role in the election even as the economy remains the paramount concern.

"The social issues do matter to a significant portion of voters, especially certain swing voters who might see a candidate's position on abortion as a marker," Rozell said. "Can they trust this candidate to govern responsibly, or is he beholden to an extreme element in his political party?"

He said Romney faces a tricky balancing act as he tries to woo middle-of-the road women without antagonizing religious conservatives who already are wary because Romney supported abortion rights in the past.

Last week, Romney told The Des Moines Register's editorial board that there wasn't any abortion-related legislation he planned to pursue as president. A spokeswoman quickly clarified his remark, and Romney told reporters: "I'll be a pro-life president."

This week, Romney's campaign released a TV ad suggesting the candidate believes abortion "should be an option" in certain cases.

In the ad, a woman says she'd heard Romney's position on abortion and birth control "seemed a bit extreme." She says she'd learned Romney doesn't oppose contraception and believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is at stake.

Dawn Laguens of Planned Parenthood said the ad was "designed to deceive women."

"The Romney team knows that Mitt Romney's real agenda for women's health is deeply unpopular ? ending safe and legal abortion, ending Planned Parenthood's preventive care that millions of people rely on," she said.
