World of Warcraft has become a cultural reference for Online ...

World of Warcraft is the most renown MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play Game) on the planet with about 12 million regular users worldwide. The complex and highly interactive nature of the game can lead players to develop a feeling of immersion so strong that it is said to be responsible for Online Gaming Addiction. Players feel as though they have become part of an alternate universe that is in some important sense separate from the world outside the game. The game was even consecrated by an episode of the popular TV show South Park, entitled ?make love not warcraft?.But for the first time a study explores how the immersion can have positive effects on people. Jeffrey Snodgrass, associate professor of anthropology at Colorado State decided to study if and how this immersion phenomenon had positive effects and produced two studies with interesting conclusions. moonglade-large

In the first study, ?Magic Flight and Monstrous Stress: Technologies of Absorption and Mental Wellness in Azeroth,? Jeffrey Snodgrass conclusions is that this World of Warcraft (also known as WOW) has a positive effect on mental health and on level of stress, satisfaction and happiness.?The idea is that if you lose yourself, you escape,? Snodgrass said. ?So it?s deeply relaxing, what some gamers describe as akin to meditation, or at other times positively challenging and stimulating, like a great chess match where you?re actually one of the pieces, and we show that there are strong associations between these various states of consciousness and the game?s health benefits. But it is important to note that the escape must be controlled and temporary to be positive, so that it leads to rejuvenation rather than simple problem avoidance, which in the end only increases the experience of stress.? It has to be controlled however and limited in time for not becoming addiction or a way of escaping the real world."Our study does show that in other instances players get drawn in too much and they enjoy losing themselves too greatly. That can contribute to problematic play and what some researchers even call online gaming addiction." The second study focuses on the differences between playing video games with individuals known outside of the game and playing with people met online. In this work, the study suggest that playing WoW with real-life-friends allows gamers to transfer in-game accomplishments and experiences into offline social networks.Playing WOW with offline friends reduces the immersion and, thus, the positive effects of it but also reduces the chances for addiction and helps a better monitoring and control of the gaming.
