Did you have pets before you had kids? We did. We moved in together and immediately decided we needed more responsibility ? so we went out and bought a dog.
I did some research, and the overall consensus was that pugs make GREAT apartment dogs. They don?t require a whole bunch or exercise (which is good, because we were on the third floor), they like to lay around a lot, and are generally pretty low maintenance. So we picked him out and brought him home. He immediately crapped on our carpet (which should have been an indication of things to come).
We were ?those people?. The pug was our baby. He came with us to family events. He slept in bed with us. He was in photos with us. We bought him ?good? dog food and he never missed a vet appt. or shot. I have a very vivid memory of watching him sleep in bed and thinking, ?there is NO WAY that we?ll have a kid and that it?s cuter than this puppy. NO WAY.?
Then, we had a baby.
Suddenly, the ?pug? became the ?dog?. We began to think, hmmm, buying a $15 bag of dog food that last 2 weeks seemed like such a waste of money. Trips with the dog? HELL NO. And it took him having a seizure for us to take him to the vet to get his shots updated a year late.
Then we had another baby.
The clacking of his (unkempt) nails on my hardwood floors just pisses me off in general. The shedding completely infuriates me. The barking while my babies are asleep makes me want to punt him over my back fence. The constant begging for food and trying to steal my kid?s food makes me want to shank him.
But then the babies go to sleep and the husband is working late and I?m by myself on the couch ? And he jumps up and buries himself under a blanket next to me. My dog is good at one thing and one thing only: cuddling. He can?t follow basic commands like ?heel? or ?come? or ?shake? ? But the pug can cuddle like a mofo. In fact, I?m pretty sure he doesn?t know he?s a dog, I think he thinks he?s a cat.
He drives me SO completely insane, and every day I think, ?geez, life would be soooo much easier and less stressful without a pet? ? and then he curls up in a ball with me in bed, and snores into the pillow, and I can?t help but kiss his squishy head. I am SUCH a sucker for the damn pug.
If you?re a parent, do you look at your animals differently now? Or am I the only awful person out there shunning my once ?furbaby??
