Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers celebrates after throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to James Jones during the Packers' 27-15 victory over NFC North rival Detroit on Thursday. The defending?Super Bowl champions are 11-0 for the first time in franchise history.

updated 6:08 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2011
DETROIT - Aaron Rodgers took every hit the Detroit Lions could dish out.
He just kept throwing ? and winning.
Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and the Green Bay Packers built a big lead in the third quarter thanks in part to Ndamukong Suh's ejection during a 27-15 victory in Detroit on Thursday.
Detroit's best chance to beat the Packers was to knock Rodgers out of the game, just as it did last year in a victory that started a nine-game winning streak.
The Lions gave that tactic a shot, hitting him even if he had already gotten rid of the ball. Kyle Vanden Bosch was flagged for one of those late hits and could've drawn another penalty for trying to rough up the star quarterback even more on the same drive.
Rodgers refused to be rattled, kept his cool and won ? again.
"We try to rise above things like that," Rodgers said. "We knew in a rivalry game, there are going to be a hard of hard hits, but we kept things between the whistles."
The defending champion Packers are 11-0 for the first time in franchise history and have won a team-record 17 straight, including the playoffs.
"I don't feel any pressure, this is a good place to be," coach Mike McCarthy said. "Who doesn't want to be 11-0?"
Green Bay easily passed what was expected to be one of its toughest tests toward joining the 2007 New England Patriots as the NFL's only teams to have 16-0 regular seasons.
"We're a long way from there," Rodgers said. "This is a big step toward our first goal, which is winning the division. If we are undefeated after 14 or 15 games, we'll talk about 16."
While the Packers are working on a perfect season, Detroit (7-4) has to figure out a way to avoid the physical and mental mistakes that have put the team on the playoff bubble after a 5-0 start.
The Lions have lost a franchise-record eight consecutive Thanksgiving games and added to their misery in ugly fashion.
"It really does ruin the holiday," center Dominic Raiola said. "You put so much into this and to go out there and lay an egg like that, it's disappointing. My day's ruined."
Suh's day might lead to another fine ? and possibly a suspension.
He was tossed for stomping on Evan Dietrich-Smith's right arm in the third quarter.
Suh insisted he didn't intentionally step on the opposing lineman with his right foot, saying he was just trying to separate himself from the situation.
"I apologize to my teammates and my fans and my coaches for putting myself in a position to be misinterpreted and taken out of the game," Suh said.
Dietrich-Smith wouldn't say it was a dirty play.
"Stuff happens," he said.
Green Bay defensive end Ryan Pickett was more outspoken.
"There's no place for that," Pickett said.
The Packers took advantage of Suh's misstep just as they did on Matthew Stafford's three interceptions.
John Kuhn followed nose tackle B.J. Raji for a 1-yard TD plunge after Suh was flagged on third down, and Green Bay turned Stafford's interceptions into two TDs and a field goal.
Detroit became the NFL's first team to win three games in a season after trailing by 17 points with Sunday's comeback win over Carolina, but the Packers proved they weren't as vulnerable as the Panthers.
The Lions finally scored when Keiland Williams ran for a 16-yard TD with 13:11 left and added the 2-point conversion on a pass from Stafford to Titus Young that trimmed Green Bay's lead to 16. They scored a meaningless TD on Stafford's 3-yard pass to Calvin Johnson with 11 seconds left.
Detroit had raised expectations for a competitive and entertaining game during its annual showcase after losing the last seven games by three-plus TDs on average.

MILLERSBURG, Ohio ? Members of the Amish community in three states have been frightened by recent hair-cutting attacks in Ohio, making fearful calls to authorities and arming themselves with pepper spray and shotguns, a sheriff said.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Amish in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana were concerned about the attacks that led federal authorities on Wednesday to raid the compound of a breakaway Amish group and charge seven men, including group leader Sam Mullet, with hate crimes.
"We've received hundreds and hundreds of calls from people living in fear," he said. "They are buying Mace, some are sitting with shotguns, getting locks on their doors because of Sam Mullet."
The sheriff added, "Sam Mullet is evil."
A daughter-in-law and former brother-in-law told federal investigators Mullet allowed the beatings of those who disobeyed him, made some members sleep in a chicken coop and had sexual relations with married women to "cleanse them."
Several members of the group outside Bergholtz in eastern Ohio carried out the attacks in September, October and November by forcibly cutting the beards and hair of Amish men and women and then taking photos of them, authorities said.
The Amish believe the Bible instructs women to let their hair grow long and men to grow beards and stop shaving once they marry. One victim told the FBI he would rather have been "beaten black and blue than to suffer the disfigurement and humiliation of having his hair removed," according to court papers.
Mullet told The Associated Press in October that he didn't order hair-cutting but didn't stop his sons and others from carrying it out. He said the goal was to send a message to other Amish that they should be ashamed of themselves for the way they were treating Mullet and his community.
"They changed the rulings of our church here, and they're trying to force their way down our throat, make us do like they want us to do, and we're not going to do that," Mullet said.
U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach said Wednesday that religious differences should be a matter of theological debate, not disputes "resolved by late night visits to people's homes with weapons and violent attacks." He said he did not know how often hate crimes involve intradenominational disputes.
Those arrested include Mullet; his sons Johnny, Lester and Daniel; Levi Miller; Eli Miller; and Emanuel Schrock. The charges carry a penalty of up 10 years in prison.
The men appeared in U.S. District Court in Youngstown on Wednesday afternoon, and Magistrate Judge George Limbert ordered them detained by the U.S. Marshals Service pending hearings next week.
Attorneys for Johnny and Lester Mullet and Levi and Eli Miller said they could not comment Wednesday on the details of the case. Messages seeking comment were left for attorneys representing Daniel Mullet and Emanuel Schrock.
Lawyer Andy Hyde, who represents Sam Mullet in the state case, said Mullet would contest the federal charges but said he didn't know if he would represent Mullet in federal court.
The seven men were sleeping when the FBI and local police showed up at their homes before dawn Wednesday, the sheriff said. Three men initially refused to come out of their rooms, but all seven were arrested without incident, he said.
The FBI affidavit detailed four hair-cutting attacks. The attacks occurred against a couple in Trumbull County on Sept. 6; on Oct. 4 against a man and his son in Holmes County; later on Oct. 4 against a man in Carroll County; and on Nov. 9 against a man allegedly lured to the Mullet complex in Jefferson County.
An FBI affidavit said Johnny, Lester and Daniel Mullet and Levi and Eli Miller all confessed in early October to taking part in at least a couple of the attacks.
Johnny Mullet told detectives that it was his idea to cut the hair and beards and that he discussed the idea with his father, who gave him the addresses of two victims, the affidavit said.
Lester Mullet told detectives that after two attacks in late September, the men went home and told Sam Mullet what happened. He said his father laughed and called them nuts, the court document said.
Abdalla, the sheriff, said he didn't know the specifics of the religious disagreements that prompted Mullet to form his own community in 1995.
But the heart of his recent dispute with Amish bishops stemmed from his desire to excommunicate several members, the FBI said. Other bishops concluded the excommunications weren't consistent with Amish teachings and scripture and decided not to recognize the penalties, the FBI said.
Authorities said previously that some Amish refused to press charges, following their practice of avoiding involvement in the courts.
Dettelbach alluded to the issue, saying: "It is not the victim's job to decide or to bring charges. I think that's a message I would like people to understand. These charges in this case are the result of our independent determination that crimes occurred."
Ohio has an estimated Amish population of just under 61,000 ? second only to Pennsylvania ? with most living in rural counties south and east of Cleveland.
They have a modest lifestyle and are deeply religious. Their traditions of traveling by horse and buggy and forgoing most modern conveniences distance them from the outside world and symbolize a yielding to a collective order.

WASHINGTON ? The point man for carrying out President Barack Obama's health care law will be stepping down after Republicans succeeded in blocking his confirmation by the Senate, the White House announced Wednesday.
Medicare chief Don Berwick, a Harvard professor widely respected for his ideas on how to improve the health care system, became the most prominent casualty of the political wars over a health care overhaul whose constitutionality will be now decided by the Supreme Court.
Praising Berwick for "outstanding work," White House deputy press secretary Jamie Smith criticized Republicans for "putting political interests above the best interests of the American people."
Berwick will be replaced by his principal deputy, Marilyn Tavenner, formerly Virginia's top health care official. The White House said Obama will submit Tavenner's nomination to the Senate.
Tavenner has been at Medicare since early last year, earning a reputation as a problem solver with years of real-world experience and an extensive network of industry contacts. A nurse by training, the 60-year-old Tavenner worked her way up to the senior executive ranks of a major hospital chain. She ran Virginia's health department under former Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine.
Berwick's fate was sealed early this year when 42 GOP senators ? more than enough to derail his confirmation ? asked Obama to withdraw his nomination. His resignation takes effect Dec. 2.
Berwick's statements as an academic praising Britain's government-run health care had become a source of controversy in politically polarized Washington. Although he later told Congress that "the American system needs its own solution" and Britain's shouldn't be copied here, his critics were not swayed.
In an email to his staff, Berwick said he leaves with "bittersweet emotions."
"Our work has been challenging, and the journey is not complete, but we are now well on our way to achieving a whole new level of security and quality for health care in America, helping not just the millions of Americans affected directly by our programs, but truly health care as a whole in our nation," Berwick wrote.
A pediatrician before becoming a Harvard professor, Berwick has many admirers in the medical community, including some former Republican administrators of Medicare. His self-styled "three-part aim" for the health care system includes providing a better overall experience for individual patients, improving the health of groups in the population such as seniors and African-Americans, and lowering costs through efficiency.
But some of his professorial ruminations dogged him in Washington. Republicans accused him of advocating health care rationing, which Berwick denies.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Berwick's past record of controversial statements and his lack of experience managing complex bureaucracies disqualified him from the Medicare job. Hatch, the ranking Republican on the Senate panel that oversees Medicare, led the opposition to his nomination. Hatch said Wednesday the Senate must "thoroughly examine" and "carefully scrutinize" Tavenner's nomination.
Berwick oversaw the drafting and rollout of major regulations that will begin to reshape the health care system, steering Medicare away from paying for sheer volume of services and procedures and instead putting a premium on quality care that keeps patients healthier and avoids costly hospitalizations. He also presided over significant improvements for Medicare beneficiaries, including better coverage for preventive care and relief for seniors with high prescription drug costs.
Berwick turned 65 this year, making him the first Medicare chief eligible to be enrolled in the program. He told The Associated Press in an earlier interview that he was putting in his application, but doesn't plan to retire any time soon. Instead he plans to keep working as an advocate for change in the nation's health care system.

NEW YORK?? Longtime jazz drummer and composer Paul Motian, who came to prominence as a member of pianist Bill Evans' trio in the late 1950s and influenced a generation of musicians with his astounding sense of time, died Tuesday at age 80.
Motian died at a Manhattan hospital because of complications of a bone marrow disorder, said friend and bandmate Joe Lovano, a tenor saxophonist who began performing with him in 1981.
"He was a hard-swinging free jazz drummer with an uncanny sense of time-phrasing and form that was beyond description," Lovano said.
Motian, who grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and spent time in the Navy, came to the forefront while a member of Evans' trio in the late 1950s and early 1960s, playing on landmark recordings such as "Waltz for Debby" and "Sunday at the Village Vanguard." He also had longtime partnerships with pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Bill Frisell.
Blame the bickering. Blame the reality TV stars. Blame the judges (and then some). The truth is this isn?t the first time ...
Lovano called him a "true natural and one of the most expressive musicians in jazz."
"His touch and sound, sense of dynamics were so personal and unmatched," Lovano said.
Motian's career also included stints as a bandleader, beginning with the album "Conception Vessel" in 1972, and as a composer of works Lovano characterized as "hauntingly beautiful." As a leader, he recorded nearly three dozen albums for the ECM, WInter & Winter and JMT labels.
"As a composer he wrote pieces of music that were vehicles for improvisation," Lovano said.
Even after Motian stopped touring, he continued to perform and record, mostly in New York and most often at the Village Vanguard jazz club, where he last performed in September, according to Lovano. His repertoire included originals, American songbook standards and traditional bebop.
Jarrett said Motian was a good drummer because he "understood composition."
"A lot of drummers are good drummers because they have some understanding of rhythm," Jarrett told The New York Times. "Paul had an innate love of song."

WASHINGTON ? Consumers barely increased their spending in October but their incomes rose by the most in seven months. The rise in take-home pay could boost spending during the upcoming holiday shopping season.
The Commerce Department said Wednesday that spending increased 0.1 percent last month, the poorest gain in four months. But incomes increased 0.4 percent, the best showing since March.
Private wages and salaries drove the income gain.
The slight October gain in consumer spending represented a big slowdown from a 0.7 percent September increase. Spending on durable goods such as autos showed a solid increase but spending on nondurable goods such as food and clothing fell.
Some economists predicted spending would slow because consumers spent more over the summer while earning less. Consumer spending is important because it makes up 70 percent of economic activity.
After-tax, inflation-adjusted incomes fell at a 2.1 percent rate over the summer, the biggest drop since the third quarter of 2009, just as the recession was ending.
At the same time, the economy grew at a rate of 2 percent in the July-September quarter because consumers increased their spending at three times the rate of the previous quarter.
Economists predict growth will strengthen to an annual growth rate of 3 percent in the final three months of the year, based on more encouraging data on retail sales and factory output.
The modest third-quarter growth is not nearly enough to lower the unemployment rate, which has been stuck near 9 percent for more than two years.
The rise in earnings may boost spending during the critical holiday shopping season, which is the busiest time of year for most retailers.
But many Americans could take home less next year if Congress doesn't extend a Social Security tax cut and emergency unemployment benefits. Both expire at the end of this year.
The Social Security tax cut gave most Americans an extra $1,000 to $2,000 this year. If long-term unemployment benefits expire, roughly 6 million families could lose an average of $300 per week. For some, that's their only source of income.
Both changes would leave Americans with an estimated $165 billion less to spend. The Federal Reserve expects the economy to grow only 2.7 percent next year, and economists say the expiration of the two programs could reduce growth by a full percentage point.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Wesley Snipes won't be leaving home with his American Express card anytime soon -- primarily because he's currently sitting in the slammer -- and that's probably a good thing.
"Blade" star Snipes was slapped with a lawsuit in Orange County, Fla., Circuit Court on Friday by American Express, which claims that the actor racked up a $29,343 bill with them when he was still walking free.
The complaint is seeking that amount, plus interest, attorney fees and court costs.
Snipes began a three-year prison sentence at Pennsylvania's McKean Federal Correction Institution in December 2010 for failing to file tax returns. The actor, 49, employed a number of tactics in an effort to establish his innocence, including the invocation of the "861 argument" which theorizes that U.S. residents' domestic income isn't taxable, and a claim that he's a "non-resident alien."
In truth, the actor was born in Orlando, Fla.
Snipes' legal representative did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment.

GENEVA?? Scientists studying the same neutrino particles that colleagues say appear to have traveled faster than light rejected the startling finding this weekend, saying their tests had shown it must be wrong.
The September announcement of the faster-than-light finding, backed up last week after new studies, caused a furor in the scientific world, as it seemed to suggest that Albert Einstein's ideas on relativity, and much of modern physics, were based on a mistaken premise.

Science editor Alan Boyle's Weblog: Send in your suggestions for the 10th annual Science Geek Gift contest ... you might just win a geeky prize.
The first team, collaborating on the OPERA experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory south of Rome, said they recorded neutrinos beamed to them from the CERN research center in Switzerland as arriving 60 nanoseconds before light would have done.
But colleagues involved in ICARUS, another experiment at Gran Sasso, now argues that their measurements of the neutrinos energy on arrival contradict that reading.
In a paper posted Saturday on the same ArXiv preprint website as the OPERA results, the ICARUS team says their findings "refute a superluminal [faster than light] interpretation of the OPERA result."
They argue, on the basis of recently published studies by two top U.S. physicists, that the neutrinos pumped down from CERN should have lost most of their energy if they had traveled at even a tiny fraction faster than light.
But in fact, the ICARUS scientists say, the neutrino beam as tested in their equipment registered an energy spectrum fully corresponding with what it should be for particles traveling at the speed of light and no more.
Physicist Tomasso Dorigo, who works at CERN as well as Fermilab near Chicago, said in a post on the website Scientific Blogging that the ICARUS paper was "very simple and definitive."
He said the paper asserted "that the difference between the speed of neutrinos and the speed of light cannot be as large as that seen by OPERA, and is certainly smaller than that by three orders of magnitude, and compatible with zero."
Under Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity, nothing can be accelerated to a speed faster than light. That idea lies at the heart of all current science of the cosmos and of how the vast variety of particles that make it up behave.
There was widespread skepticism when the OPERA findings were first revealed, and even the leaders of the experiment insisted that they were not announcing a discovery but simply recording measurements they had made and carefully checked.
Last week, the OPERA researchers said a new experiment with shorter neutrino beams from CERN and much larger gaps between them had produced the same result. Independent scientists said, however, this was not conclusive.
Other experiments are being prepared ? at Fermilab and at the KEK laboratory in Japan ? to try to replicate OPERA's findings. Only confirmation from one of these would open the way for a full scientific discovery to be declared.

LOS ANGELES ? It's raining music artists ? and just raining ? outside the American Music Awards.
Taio Cruz, Joe Jonas, Jenny McCarthy and Smokey Robinson were among the celebrities who braved the tented red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre in unusually dreary Los Angeles for the 39th annual performance-packed show.
Alanis Morissette didn't let the drippy weather stop her from wearing a dreamy black chiffon dress and fishtail braid.
"It was planned way before," confessed the singer, who will introduce Mary J. Blige and her tribute to the late rapper Heavy D.
Adele is the leading nominee at this year's AMAs, but the British singer won't be attending Sunday's ceremony because she is recovering from recent throat surgery.
The 23-year-old singer is up for four awards: Female artist, adult contemporary artist, artist of the year and favorite album for "21," the country's best-selling album this year.
Other top nominees include Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and The Band Perry, who have three bids apiece. Fans chose the winners by voting online.
Nicki Minaj and David Guetta are set to open the show, which will air live on ABC.

Days go by, we live our lives, she is always there
We see her, but we don't
She exists, she watches us; she thinks we don't care
A smile on her ruby lips; it is all just lies
If we could read her thoughts
Watch her smile now, very close; doesn't reach her eyes
Very smart, she's a writer, pen always in hand
Works that no one had read
Quiet soul, she's a poet no one understands
She goes to school, she comes home; not a single friend
A fortress in her mind
She's built walls in her defense; waiting for the end
Her mother and her father; verbal battlezone
Takes refuge in her art
Even in a crowded room, she still feels alone
Crumbling castle, falling down; her world breaks apart
Silently she's weeping
Her refuge has betrayed her; breaks her fragile heart
A razor, or a bullet, or a fist of pills
She calmly makes her choice
One by one, she swallowed them; now lies cold and still
Poor dear child, a tragic tale; none could lend a hand
She never stood a chance
How could we hear her silence? Could we understand?
Is she damned? Has she no hope? Can she be redeemed?
Please, God,forgive her deed
She gave up on all she'd planned; lost all she had dreamed
Had she reached, we would have helped; but she hid in fear
Now she's beyond our aid

(Reuters) ? AOL Inc's head of applications and commerce group and Silicon Valley operations is stepping down, Bloomberg said citing a person with direct knowledge of the matter.
Brad Garlinghouse, an executive brought on in 2009, previously worked at Yahoo Inc and Silver Lake Partners, the agency said.
Sarah Lacy, a senior editor at TechCrunch, which was sold to AOL last year, also intends to depart, Bloomberg reported citing another person familiar with the situation. Michael Arrington left the company in September.
The company, which Time Warner spun off after a disastrous decade-long merger, is trying to regain its status as a popular online destination that attracts advertising dollars from the likes of auto companies and consumer packaged-goods makers.

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China climbed nearly 16 percent in the first 10 months of 2011 from a year earlier as foreign investors continued to flock to the world's fastest-growing major economy despite the global economic malaise.
China drew $95 billion in FDI in the first 10 months of this year, up 15.9 percent from the same period in 2010, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday, putting it on track for another record year of FDI inflows.
Growth slowed slightly from a 17 percent rise in the fist nine months, dragged by sluggish inflows from the United States and Europe, the ministry said.
In October alone, China attracted $8.3 billion in FDI, up 8.75 percent from a year ago, the ministry said.
Investment inflows, which surged in the years after China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, have recovered strongly after being hit hard by the global economic slowdown.
FDI from 10 major Asian countries and regions soared 20.7 percent in January-October from the same period a year earlier, with inflows from Japan jumping 65.5 percent, it said.
FDI from the United States dipped 18.1 percent in the first 10 months year-on-year while inflows from the European Union inched up 1.1 percent, underscoring their economic woes.
Firms invested $44.5 billion in the services sector, up 20.7 percent from a year earlier. The manufacturing sector drew $43.6 billion in funds, but the annual growth rate was a more moderate 11.7 percent.
Meanwhile, China's outbound investment rose 14.1 percent in the first 10 months from a year earlier to $46.3 billion, including $15.6 billion via mergers and acquisitions in overseas markets, the ministry said.
China has been encouraging its companies to invest overseas to shore up their competitiveness and help relieve the upward pressure on the yuan from hefty capital inflows.
"NOT OPTIMISTIC" ON EXPORTS
The ministry also cautioned that China's export outlook could be grim for the rest of this year and the early part of next year as Europe struggles to contain its sovereign debt crisis and the United States seeks to spur its fragile recovery.
"China's export outlook in the near future is not very optimistic," Shen Danyang, the ministry's spokesman told a news conference.
Shen shrugged off foreign criticism, particularly from the United States, that China keeps the yuan undervalued, giving the country a persistent trade advantage, saying such accusations was "groundless and unreasonable."
"Currently, China's yuan exchange rate is basically at a reasonable level and range," he said.
U.S. President Barack Obama served notice on Sunday in Honolulu that the United States was fed up with China's trade and currency practices as he turned up the heat on America's biggest economic rival.
He said the undervalued yuan gives Chinese products a 20-25 percent price advantage in global markets.
But Chinese President Hu Jintao insisted U.S. trade and employment problems would not be solved by even a major appreciation of China's yuan versus the dollar.
China's exports grew 15.9 percent in October from a year earlier, their most sluggish expansion in eight months. After stripping out the traditionally volatile month of February, October's growth was the slowest since November 2009.
Imports jumped 28.7 percent in October, suggesting efforts to tilt the economy toward domestic demand may be offsetting the external weakness that has dragged on economic growth this year. That helped limit October's trade surplus to $17 billion.

The video is like a day in the life of Selena Gomez — if she wasn't an internationally known singer/actress and had time to hang out with her mall-punk friends and dance her life away. The message of the clip (and the song) seems to be to have fun, live your life and throw caution to the wind.
Gomez kicks the party off early, giving flirty looks while riding around on tractors and smashing pumpkins as the track's pulsing beat plays to her feel-good lyrics. Midway through the video, the atmosphere transitions from day to night and Gomez's wardrobe also takes on a more sparkling vibe.
Next, Selena shows up at a house party with lights flashing everywhere. She dances around as scenes of a far-off city flash by in fast-motion. The song closes out with a montage of party scenes, and in the end, Selena is left alone in a field somewhere, fireworks blasting above her as she twirls around with sparklers ion her hands.
"Hit the Lights" is the latest single off Gomez's album, When the Sun Goes Down, and in behind-the-scenes footage released last week, she opened up about the clip.
"The song 'Hit the Lights' is that missed opportunity. The dreams that you wish you would go for and basically the song is just encouraging people to [let] loose and have fun and be young and crazy," she explained. "This video is more organic than anything I've done before. It's about being with people you love and enjoying the moment and embracing the moment you're in your life."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Justin Timberlake's date with a Marine combat instructor on Saturday night was "one of the most moving evenings" of his life, the singer-turned-actor said on his website.
Keeping his promise to Corporal Kelsey De Santis, Timberlake donned formal wear to escort her to the Instructor Battalion Marine Corps Ball in Richmond, Virginia.
In a post on his website Sunday, Timberlake noted that he was "almost brought to tears" during a video tribute to Marines.
De Santis, who practices mixed martial arts, invited Timberlake to the event via a YouTube video in July.
She was inspired to reach out to him after he publicly encouraged Mila Kunis, his "Friends with Benefits" co-star, to accept a similar invitation from a serviceman.
"You want to call out my girl Mila?" De Santis said to Timberlake in her video. "Well, I'm going to call you out and ask you to come to the Marine Corps ball with me on November 12."
She added, "If you can't go, all I have to say is, cry me a river."
Timberlake said in his post that he and De Santis had ample time to chat before the evening's ceremony, and that she spoke of her training in mixed martial arts "with a passion, a discipline, and a respect." He was struck by her concern with his comfort at the ball.
"I have to tell you, it's not every day that I meet a 23-year-old girl and she's more worried about if I'm having fun or if I'm comfortable!" Timberlake wrote. "It hit me all of a sudden that these were the type of people that look after us and our freedom... Last night changed my life and I will never forget it."
A military wife who attended Saturday's event at the Richmond Convention Center told local news station WTVR that Timberlake "posed for pictures and seemed like a normal guy."
Kunis, meanwhile, will attend a Marine Corps Ball with Sergeant Scott Moore on November 18 in Greenville, North Carolina.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.?? The arduous task of rebuilding Penn State's shattered image began Friday with a pledge by the board of trustees to search for the truth and continued at night with a candlelight vigil by thousands supporting victims of an unfolding child sex abuse case.
The scandal involving a former assistant football coach has already claimed the jobs of coach Joe Paterno and the school's president.
In front of an overflow crowd at a meeting that was moved from a hotel boardroom to a ballroom to accommodate more people, the trustees opened with Chairman Steve Garban welcoming the replacement president, Rod Erickson, and Gov. Tom Corbett, who had pressed publicly for fast action by trustees accustomed to deferring to Spanier.
The meeting was the first public gathering of the 32-member board in the wake of the scandal that has gripped one of the nation's largest universities and touched off a violent student demonstration. In addition to the firing of Paterno and President Graham Spanier, an assistant coach who told his bosses in 2002 that he saw an assault was placed on administrative leave Friday.

Garban pledged to support Erickson ? the trustees removed the "interim" tag on his new title but will continue to search for a permanent successor to Spanier ? as the board works "for the future of this institution that we respect and love." Erickson, previously the university's longtime provost, said Penn State must devote itself to its core values ? honesty, integrity, excellence and community ? now more than ever.
"I know we can do this. We are resilient; we are a university that will rebuild the trust and confidence that so many people have had in us for so many years," Erickson said in a six-minute speech to the trustees.
Photoblog: Candles try to brighten a dark week at Penn StateWithout mentioning Spanier or Paterno, Erickson told trustees that their deliberate and decisive action had set a course for the university's future. His heart aches for the victims and their families, he said, and he pledged to reassure Penn Staters that the university's future is still bright.

Paterno and Spanier were fired Wednesday in the fallout of a shocking days-old grand jury report alleging repeated, illicit contact between retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and boys as young as 10 over a span of 15 years, sometimes in Penn State's facilities.
The grand jury report said that administrators did not contact law enforcement authorities after a graduate assistant for the football team said he saw Sandusky sodomizing a boy of about 10 years old in the locker room showers at the team's practice center in 2002. Top school officials, including Paterno and Spanier, say they weren't told about the seriousness of the matter.
Sandusky has been aware of the accusations against him for about three years and has maintained his innocence, his lawyer has said.
Candlelight vigil
Candles, not police lights, lit Penn State's campus Friday night as thousands of students and supporters gathered for the victims in the child sex abuse scandal.
Penn State senior and vigil organizer Jessica Sever said she wanted the vigil to put the focus back on the boys, especially after police had to break up a violent student rally touched off by Wednesday's firing of Paterno.
"I'm really glad we could come together and focus our attention on something positive which is support for those victims who have been hurt so badly," Rebecca Miller, junior, told NBC Philadelphia.
"We don't condone what happened and those events. We want to separate ourselves from that and really establish the name of Penn State," said Alex Smith, junior.
Obama weighs in
President Barack Obama said Friday evening that the Penn State sex abuse scandal should lead to "soul-searching" by all Americans, not just Penn State.
He told Westwood One Radio, during a halftime broadcast from the USS Carl Vinson during the N. Carolina-Michigan State basketball game being played on the aircraft carrier, that when people see someone mistreated, they must step up
"Our first priority is protecting our kids, and we all have a responsibility ? we can't leave it to a system, we can't leave it to somebody else. Each of us has to take it upon ourselves to make sure that our kids have the love and support and protection that they deserve," he said.
Failure under investigation
The Penn State board adjourned Friday after forming an investigative committee, to be headed by trustee Kenneth Frazier, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Merck, to dig into the university's failure to stop Sandusky's alleged activity. Ronald Tomalis, a trustee and state education secretary, will be vice chairman.
The rest of the committee has yet to be formed, but Frazier said it will have the power to hire independent lawyers and plans to publicly release the entirety of its findings.
"That's absolutely what we intend to do," Frazier said after the meeting. "The purpose of this investigation is to ensure that the public understands everything that we learn in this investigation and a report will be made completely public as quickly as we possibly can."
The university as a whole, however, has a long way to go before anything can be considered routine now that Paterno, whose 46 years leading the Nittany Lions turned him into an icon in the area known as Happy Valley and beyond, is gone. The school named defensive coordinator Tom Bradley interim coach on Thursday.
Paterno's firing touched off a violent student rally late Wednesday night, requiring police in riot gear, at times using pepper spray, to disperse about 2,000 who took to the streets and toppled a television news van.
The university's faculty senate on Friday called on students and employees to "act in ways that bring honor to our institution and ourselves."
Sandusky served as Paterno's top defensive assistant for more than two decades and at one time was considered his heir apparent. But he abruptly retired in 1999, about a year after university police investigated a complaint by the mother of a woman upset that Sandusky had showered with and bear-hugged her 11-year-old son, the grand jury report alleged.
Authorities said Sandusky met many of his alleged victims through The Second Mile, a charity he founded in 1977 to help at-risk youth.
Two face perjury charges
Former athletic director Tim Curley and former university vice president Gary Schultz have been charged with perjury and failure to report the 2002 assault, as required by state law. Lawyers for the men say that they are innocent, that they told the truth to the grand jury and that they told Spanier what they knew, fulfilling their legal obligation.
About a week and a half after the 2002 incident, the graduate assistant ? identified by people familiar with the investigation as Mike McQueary, now the team's wide receivers coach ? met with Curley and Schultz, and told them he had witnessed what he believed to be Sandusky having sex with a boy, the grand jury report said.
McQueary was placed on administrative leave Friday, Erickson said, and won't be coaching at Saturday's game against Nebraska because he has received threats. McQueary, during a conference call with players and his replacement, revealed he was no longer in State College and was in protective custody at a secluded location, the Patriot-News of Harrisburg, Pa., reported.
Spanier told the grand jury that Schultz and Curley went to him and reported an incident that made a member of Curley's staff "uncomfortable."
"Spanier described it as 'Jerry Sandusky in the football building locker area in the shower ... with a younger child and they were horsing around in the shower,'" the grand jury report said.
Paterno, major college football's winningest coach, has said he wasn't told "the very specific actions" contained in the grand jury report, but he also has acknowledged that "with the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."
Paterno hires attorney
NBC News National Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff reported that Paterno had reached out to a prominent Washington criminal defense lawyer to represent him in the case. A source close to Paterno told Isikoff that the former coach was concerned about the possibility that Sandusky's alleged victims and their families could bring civil lawsuits against him.
Scott Paterno, son of Joe Paterno, confirmed the Isikoff report Friday.
"Like everyone who has watched this story unfold, my father is experiencing a range of powerful emotions," the younger Paterno said, NBC News reported. "He is absolutely distraught over what happened to the children and their families. He also wants very much to speak publicly and answer questions."
"At this stage, however, he has no choice but to be patient and defer to the legal process. He cooperated fully with the Grand Jury and he will continue to cooperate with the investigation as we move forward."
"On behalf of my father, I have retained Wick Sollers at the law firm of King and Spalding. My father's desire is for the truth to be uncovered and he will work with his lawyers to that end."
Sandusky home vandalized
Meanwhile, police were investigating apparent vandalism at the house of Sandusky, according to NBC News.
A police report stated that an unidentified person threw two cinder blocks through a bedroom window of the house on Friday. No one was hurt and there were no immediate arrests.
Police would not say if anyone was in the house at the time.
The Penn State Athletic Department said Friday it would increase security measures at all home athletic events through Sunday, NBC News reported.
Bags of any sort, including purses, will not be permitted at the Bryce Jordan Center, Greenburg Ice Pavilion, Jeffrey Field and Rec Hall, it said.
For Saturday's football game against Nebraska, fans were encouraged to arrive earlier than usual as inspections will be more deliberate and thorough and the university's regulation on bags will be strictly enforced, officials said.
Texas investigation under way
Prosecutors in Texas also have opened an investigation into the possibility of filing charges against Sandusky, police have said.
The move followed the release of grand jury testimony indicating Sandusky may have sexually assaulted one of his young victims when the Penn State team was in San Antonio for the 1999 Alamo Bowl.
"We are looking into the possibility that an offense may have happened in San Antonio," San Antonio Police Sergeant Chris Benavides said.
Unsealed grand jury testimony in the Sandusky case in Pennsylvania indicates that a now 27-year-old man described in the transcript as "Victim Number Four" testified he was brought to San Antonio as part of the "Sandusky family party" to watch the Nittany Lions beat Texas A&M in the 1999 Alamo Bowl.
NBC News, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
